Prior to leaving London yesterday I had the pleasure of being given a guided tour of James Purdey & Sons, the iconic and arguably the most famous British gunmaker. My guide was the Chairman of Purdey, James Horne.
Purdey has been accommodated in their premises in South Audley St, Mayfair since 1882.
A highlight was a visit to Purdey’s famous Long Room which over the past 130 years has hosted some of the world’s greatest hunters, global royalty and world leaders and other VIP visitors.
The Long Room was also used by General Eisenhower’s staff to plan the Normandy Landing. A letter of gratitude from Eisenhower’s Deputy Chief of Staff, General Bedell-Smith takes pride of place along with the Warrants issued by HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
